The Different Types of Foundations for Your House

When time to build a house comes, a ton of decisions must be made. One of the most important ones is to decide on which type of foundation you’ll want to build it. Since the foundation will support the weight of the whole hose, you have to choose the one that’s most suitable according to the type of ground. Here are the 4 types of foundations available for your building.

Slab on the Ground

This type or foundation is a thick slab of concrete that’s protected against the frost, and that’s put on a clay ground and/or that has a high phreatic groundwater. There is no need to dig a hole to install this slab of concrete, which doesn’t make it a deep foundation. The slab’s conception must be adapted to the type of ground on which it is installed.

Basement

The basement is a foundation that’s built under the ground level. All the rooms that are in it are underground. In order to avoid contact between dampness and the foundations, you must bring a particular attention to the drains, to the waterproofing, and to the insulation of the slab. The basement is the most popular type of foundation in the province of Quebec.

The Crawl Space

The crawl space is a place that puts air between the ground and the first floor. Since its role is to house canalization and to keep the floor away from dampness and the ground, the crawl space is hard to access with its height that’s usually going from 3 to 5 feet. Even if the house isn’t entirely over a crawl space, it’s often the case with solariums or verandas.

Posts and Piles

When the construction site offers a strong slope or a soil that’s very difficult to dig in, a screw-pile foundation or concrete pillars are the solution to choose. All these types of foundations will sink in the ground deeply in order to ensure a stable and solid foundation for your house.

The Importance of the Foundation’s Insulation

Whatever the type of foundation you choose on which you’ll build your house, an adequate insulation with blown polyurethane will ensure comfort and protection from the cold, dampness, air and radon. It will also contribute to the building’s energetic efficiency.
